How the Müthing joinery is making its business safer with HAND GUARD

An application example for AI in the skilled trades

Video insight: When AI helps to work more safely in the workshop

In the video, the employees of the Müthing joinery report on how they work with the HAND GUARD sliding table saw on a daily basis – and why the camera-based safety system is a real benefit for them.

The technology detects potential hazards and stops the saw blade in a fraction of a second – for greater safety directly at the workplace.

“I had an accident on a sliding table saw that cost me half a finger. That’s why I was very interested in the HAND GUARD system from Altendorf.
We were one of the first joineries to put the saw with AI image recognition into operation.”

Digitalisation and AI in the skilled trades – at the State Parliament in Düsseldorf

The exhibition “Future.Craft.NRW” showcases how digitalisation and artificial intelligence support the skilled trades and create new scope for genuine craftsmanship.
It has been open to the public in Düsseldorf since its official inauguration by André Kuper, President of the State Parliament, and will run until 23 October 2025.

The Altendorf AI Demonstrator is part of the exhibition and invites all visitors to try it out for themselves.

At various stations, visitors gain fascinating insights into the innovative solutions developed by craft enterprises.

HAND GUARD – Safety through technology

HAND GUARD is the world’s first and only certified, AI-supported safety assistance system for sliding table saws.

It not only helps to protect hands, but also provides greater peace of mind and confidence in the workshop. Developed from practice – for practice.

Find out more about HAND GUARD

HAND GUARD uses a camera system to detect when a hand approaches the saw blade – similar to a collision warning system in a car.

Thanks to: FHM Bielefeld, Chapeau GmbH and Tischlerei Müthing for the image and video material.
